The model is proven, many times over.

Before building, we mapped the leading companies worldwide doing what August Aviation plans, and where the sharpest Australian opportunity sits: the mining sector. Every model below is a real, operating business. The lessons shape our sequence.

Comparables worldwide

Eight categories. Dozens of operators. One conclusion.

Each is a live business, grouped by the line it proves. The one-line takeaway is what it teaches us.

FY25 ~US$4.7B (60% recurring)

A pathway-aligned campus gains accreditation and a student pipeline.

Air Gold CoastAustralia (QLD)

Local GA flight school at Gold Coast Airport

Small regional operator

The top end of the GC training market is underserved, quieter inland airspace wins.

Drones & BVLOS

Commercial drone services and a quiet-airspace test base, the bridge to aerospace R&D.

RocketDNAAustralia (ASX)

Autonomous mining drones; BMA, Rio, BHP contracts

1,500 flights/month · 1st BVLOS self-assess

The established mining-drone competitor, target the tier below its contracts.

Sphere DronesAustralia

Enterprise BVLOS for mining/utilities/infrastructure

CASA broad-area BVLOS approval (2025)

A quiet-airspace airfield is an ideal paid BVLOS base.

EmesentAustralia (CSIRO)

Underground LiDAR drone mapping

Internationally commercialised

Niche autonomy IP, the kind of R&D an airfield can incubate.

eVTOL & future air mobility

Electric air taxis already naming Brisbane as a launch city, infrastructure partners, not competitors (yet).

Eve / Alt Air / SkyportsBrazil / AU / UK

eVTOL network being mapped for NSW & QLD

~2,700 commitments · Brisbane 2032 roadmap

They're scouting QLD vertiport sites now, host one.

Wisk (Boeing)USA

Gen-6 flying · Brisbane named launch city

Design for autonomous ops from the start, future-proof.

JobyUSA

Electric air taxi; bought Blade's passenger arm

Dubai launch 2026 · well-capitalised

Vertiport + charging infrastructure is a landing site they'll pay for.

What the failures teach us

  • Surf AirAll-you-can-fly subscription lost US$110M in 2025, needs route density Australia lacks. Don't launch on subscriptions.
  • Wheels UpMembership platform needed a US$500M Delta rescue. Start asset-light, not with a guaranteed fleet.
  • VolatoSmall-fleet light-jet fractional failed, fractional only works at NetJets/Flexjet scale.
  • eVTOL revenue (near-term)Unproven and uncertified in Australia. Build the infrastructure; bank zero eVTOL revenue before ~2028–30.
Focus · Australian mining

The sharpest wedge is the mining sector.

Australian mining runs 24/7 and pays for speed. A private strip south of Brisbane reaches every Queensland coal and gas basin, and removes the dead-time the incumbents can’t avoid.

Who we’d be up against

Alliance AviationDominant FIFO operator. FY25 ~A$773M, 79 aircraft, ~15 long-term contracts (Glencore, Newmont).
National Jet Express (Rex)Most aggressive new QLD FIFO entrant, Brisbane/Cairns ↔ Moranbah, Emerald, Gladstone.
SkytransCairns/Rockhampton-based; flies Rockhampton ↔ Carmichael (Galilee).
Adagold · Seair PacificBrisbane/Gold Coast charter incumbents, but neither has a strip between the GC and Brisbane.

The entry plan, wedge first, scale later

Now · Yr 1

AOG & urgent parts charter

One King Air / PC-12. Downtime costs a mine ~A$130k/hr; a 2-hr charter costs ~A$8–12k. No FIFO tender, sell direct to maintenance managers on availability. ~50%+ margins.

Yr 1

Exploration & development charter

Flexible small-aircraft charter for junior/mid-tier miners, investor tours and site visits, a market the big operators can't serve, won on relationships and a local base.

Yr 1–2

Mining drone services

ReOC + stockpile volumetrics / inspection for mid-tier Bowen Basin mines below RocketDNA's contract tier. R&D-tax-eligible; builds the autonomy IP.

Yr 3–5

Small / mid FIFO

Add a Dash 8 once the AOC, safety record and mine-site access are in place. Win shutdown/surge rotations first, then bid full contracts.

The differentiator

Alliance and NJE fly from Brisbane. A worker on the Gold Coast or in the hinterland loses 2–3 hours getting there. August Aviation’s own strip removes dead-time the incumbents literally cannot replicate without building their own infrastructure.
